Job Title: Public Health Specialist

Department: Health Services

Reports To: Health Services Director - Rachel Armas

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

TS Range: 10/11 ($35.54)

Position Summary:

The Public Health Specialist works to strengthen the Squaxin Island Tribe’s efforts to develop and identify public health gaps to develop a public health plan. This position will assist with the development, coordination and delivery of infectious disease control, health promotion/disease prevention, environmental public health or other public health related areas. This position will also support current Tribal health promotion and disease prevention programs.

Responsibilities:

PLANNING

· Create assessment tool to assess the Tribe’s current public health structure. Assists with identification of team members to participate on a Public Health Team.

· Develops a survey for community and leaders to identify gaps in public health.

· Makes recommendations to key Tribal leaders and health director

· Coordinates and records team meetings

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

· Participates in the development, execution and creation of Health programs/efforts to address the health and wellness of patients.

· Works other health promotion/disease prevention programs to develop goals and objectives to include community and public health projects.

· Develops and assists work plans with metrics for data-based future decision making/program changes and accountability

COMMUNICATIONS

· Creates trainings, tools, and documents

· Creates and coordinates handouts, social media, advertisement, and promotional materials.

· Ensures that all communication is compliant with Squaxin Island Tribe’s vision for public health initiatives.

· Other duties as required

· Ability to work cooperatively with Tribal community;

· Ability to forge productive relationships with consultants and external partners;

· Proficient in the use of the computer, Microsoft Word, Excel;

· Experience marketing and educating through social media platforms.

· Collect data accurately and in a timely manner;

· Experience preparing educational materials such as posters, flyers and other communications media is desired;

· Experience working with Native American communities preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS : Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common medical journals or educational materials. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the community. Ability to write and develop educational materials for patients.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to understand with mathematical concepts such statistics. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY : Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS : Must have a valid Washington State Drivers License and be insurable under the Tribe’s plan. Must successfully pass a background check.

Requirements:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE : Master’s Degree in Public or Community Health and 2 years experience in the public or community health field,, Bachelor’s Degree in nursing, health education or public health services related field and 4 years experience in the public or community health field, OR an Associate’s Degree in a related field and 6 years of relevant experience.

Experience working in community health program with a variety of services and disciplines, preferably a Tribal or urban Indian health program.
