Position Overview
Under the leadership of the Associate Director of General & Company Management, manages, maintains, creates,
and implements the environmental health and safety programs, of the Festival, including accident prevention,
training, mandatory reporting, emergency preparedness, and safety protocols.
Organizational Background
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) was founded in 1935 in Ashland, OR, and has grown from a three-day festival of two plays to a nationally renowned theatre arts organization that presents a rotating repertory season of up to 10 plays and musicals, including illuminating interpretations of Shakespeare, other enduring classics, and new works. OSF productions have been presented on Broadway, internationally, and at regional, community, and high school theatres across the country. OSF received the 1983 Special Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre and is one of the largest nonprofit theatres in the nation with three stages, including an outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Leadership and Management
• Management: Recruit, hire and manage Safety and Security staff, both year-round and seasonal. Conduct annual evaluations of all direct reports Ensure effective team performance, clear communication, and consistent application for safety protocols.
• Scheduling & Payroll: Manage staff and contractor scheduling and payroll/invoices.
• Budget: Manage Safety & Security budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and the efficient use of resources to maintain a safe environment.
• Serve as Safety leader for OSF, its employees and contractors.
• Risk Assessment: Perform detailed risk assessments for all departments, identifying potential risk/vulnerabilities in safety and security. Advise management on best practices and ensure full compliance with required safety standards including OSHA.
• Risk Mitigation Plans: Develop and implement workplans to mitigate risks, ensuring ongoing safety and continuity of operations.
• Workplace Safety Programs: Administer workplace and accident prevention programs to ensure compliance with federal and state OSHA regulations. Track and resolve safety issues in a timely manner. Oversee workers' compensation claims by ensuring proper documentation, timely reporting, and communication with insurance providers. Ensure compliance with state-specific workers' compensation laws and assist injured employees through the claims process to facilitate recovery and return to work.
• Maintenance: Ensure first aid kits, AED machines, and other safety equipment are maintained. Manage or supervise the management of any OSF wellness/fitness programs.
2. Incident Response and Investigation
• Incident Response Coordination: Oversee safety or security incident report forms and coordinate with appropriate OSF personnel and authorities (police, fire department, medical staff).
• Investigation and Root Cause Analysis: Lead investigations into incidents to identify cause, recommend corrective actions, and ensure continuous improvement in safety and security practices
3. Training and Awareness Programs
• Employee Safety Training: Develop and deliver regular safety and security training programs to employees at all levels. Including emergency response training, active shooter, conflict de-escalation, hazard awareness, CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen. Manager is required to maintain certification as a CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogen trainer.
4. Legal and Regulatory Compliance
• Compliance Monitoring: Ensure compliance with additional safety and security regulations such as fire safety laws, OSHA standards, environmental regulations, ADA requirements, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and any other relevant local or federal laws.
• Licensing and Certification Requirements: Ensure that the organization and security team are compliant with necessary licenses, certifications, and regulatory requirements (e.g., local security contractor certifications, health & safety certifications, and OLCC certifications).
• Policies and Procedures: Implement, maintain and enforce OSF safety and security policies and procedures.
5. Insurance and Liability
• Insurance Liaison: Work with OSF’s third-party insurance, SAIF liaison, and other local law/fire professionals to manage risk assessments, claims, and safety audits to help mitigate organizational liabilities.
• Liability Mitigation: Develop and oversee programs aimed at reducing organizational risk and liability.
Work collaboratively with People & Culture department on worker’s compensation claims and liability protection.
6. Emergency Preparedness Programs & Communication
• Programs Planning: Assist in developing and implementing emergency preparedness programs, including wildfire smoke protocols, power failures, fire, flood, other natural disasters, and active shooter awareness.
• Crisis Communications: Act as a point of contact for managing internal OSF communications during a safety crisis. Collaborate with Marketing & Communications department for any external communication. This includes developing internal messaging across all OSF communication platforms (Teams, Email, Alert Media, Text, Share Point, and Phone Tree).
• Public Safety Interaction: Coordinate with local law enforcement, public health, and emergency services for safety-related matters that may affect the organization including patrons.
7. Security Management Patrols and Surveillance
• On-site Security Patrols: Oversee/coordinate physical security patrols of OSF facilities to monitor for hazards or security breaches in collaboration with OSF’s contracted security team.
• Event Security: Oversee security for high-traffic or high-risk events, ensuring that appropriate measures are in place for crowd control, emergency response, and general safety. These events include OSF performances, special events, rental events, parties, and all other ticketed events.
• Surveillance: In collaboration with OSF’s IT department administer surveillance, access control, and radio systems for all security teams.
o Security Systems Management: Oversee and maintain security systems including cameras,
alarms, access control systems, and communication systems.
o Technology Integration: Implement and manage new security technologies to improve safety
across the organization, such as mobile communication apps, biometric access, remote
monitoring, CCTV or live feed cameras in collaboration with IT department.
8. Committees and Teams
• Oversee and ensure the effective functioning of the monthly Safety Committee in compliance with Oregon and Federal OSHA regulations.
• Lead the Health, Wellness, and Safety Committee(s), providing guidance to the Safety Coordinator.
• Serve as the leader of OSF’s Smoke Team, Infectious Disease Team, and ensure protocols and best practices are followed.
• In collaboration with Facilities department, lead quarterly building inspections.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
• Ergonomics, Accessibility, and Return-to-Work Programs:
o Assist employees with ergonomic evaluations to reduce occupation-related injuries, provide tools and modifications for ADA accessibility, and manage the return-to-work process in collaboration with employees, managers, and People & Culture, including ergonomic training and environmental assessments.
• Explosives, Firearms, and Theatrical Safety Management:
o Support the management of pyrotechnic materials, open flame usage, and firearms for productions, liaising with local fire authorities, police, and ATF to ensure compliance with safety regulations and risk management protocols.
o Conduct Safety Walkthroughs, Show Stop meetings, and other show related safety presentations.
• Other Duties as assigned:
o Perform additional duties related to safety, security, and emergency preparedness as directed by management.
Supervision Received: Associate Director of General & Company Management
Supervision Exercised: Safety Coordinator(s), Security Guards, Associate Safety Coordinator(s), Wellness/Fitness providers, and or Nutritionist(s).
Liaisons With : Producers, Stage Managers, Production Managers, General & Company Management, Facilities, People & Culture, and all department heads on ongoing safety issues.
Schedule : Irregular work schedule including evenings and weekends, generally a 5-6-day week. The work schedule changes frequently with little notice.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education : Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience:
• Five years of experience in safety and security management
• At least two years in a supervisory or leadership role
Requirements : OSHA-30-Hour certification, OSHA-10-Hour certification, CPR/First Aid certified, Valid Driver’s License, ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and work under pressure.
Skills, Abilities, and/or Knowledge :
• In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, OSHA standards, and local/state/federal safety requirements.
• Intermediate to expert skill level with Microsoft Office Suite programs.
• Knowledge of the administration and implementation of SDS systems.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills (English primarily).
• Ability to manage employee relations with a wide variety of staff with diverse backgrounds.
• Highly developed organizational skills and the ability to keep multiple projects moving forward simultaneously.
• Willingness and ability to acquire necessary qualification(s) through on-the-job training and education and
certification opportunities.
Physical Abilities :
• Ability to be present in all areas of OSF campus to access each level of all buildings including walking long
distances and climbing stairs.
• Occasionally climb straight ladders and kneel, crouch, stoop, and crawl.
• Regularly sit at a workstation for hours at a time.
• Occasionally lift 30 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills : Experience working with theatrical unions (AEA, IATSE, SDC). EDI or anti-racist trainings. Environmental, Health and Safety experience. OSHA Certifications. CPR, AED, First Aid training.
Knowledge of OSHA, HIPAA, OHA, CDC guidelines. Public Safety degree(s). Certified Protection Professional training (CPP), or similar industry-recognized certifications.
Salary: $95,000 annual
